May 10, 2025 – Ocala, Florida
The streets of Ocala were alive with excitement yesterday morning as 305 registered participants gathered for the 4th Annual Mother’s Day 5K, organized by Radical Runs under the leadership of owner Darrin DeTorres.
Under overcast skies, runners of all ages tackled the 3.1-mile course through the streets of Ocala.
The women’s field was dominated by Susan Morelilo from Newbury, Florida, who crossed the finish line in 21:57, earning her not only the title of fastest female but also the fastest mother in the race.

Eighth-grader Asher Inman claimed the overall male victory with an impressive time of 18:09, shaving three seconds off his performance from last week’s Cogent Bank Ocala Cup 5K. Inman, a rising star in the local running scene, trains with the Ocala Distance Project, a youth program dedicated to promoting long-distance running among Ocala’s young athletes.

Commemorative Race Merchandise
Participants received a soft, natural-colored t-shirt featuring the event’s heartwarming logo of a mother bear and her cub. All finishers were also awarded participation medals that incorporated the same mother and cub bear design, creating a matching commemorative set to remember the special event.
This year’s race theme continued the tradition of celebrating motherhood through nature-inspired imagery. Last year’s theme showcased two manatees, while next year’s design will feature two horses, reflecting Ocala’s rich equestrian heritage.
Top finishers were rewarded with reusable Mother’s Day 5K canvas bags along with their medals, highlighting the event’s eco-conscious approach.
Race Day Highlights
The post-race atmosphere was enhanced by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, courtesy of event sponsor Calles De Oro Coffee. The local luxury coffee brand served their freshly brewed Columbian coffee free of charge to all participants. The coffee was so well received that representatives from Calles De Oro expressed excitement about partnering with other races to offer post-race coffee in the future.
Award ceremonies were expedited as thunder rumbled in the distance, with race officials keeping a watchful eye on the threatening weather.
“We’re thrilled with the turnout for our fourth annual event,” said DeTorres. “Seeing mothers, families, and individuals from all walks of life come together to celebrate Mother’s Day through fitness is exactly what we envisioned when we started this tradition.”
The event was captured beautifully by race photographer Julie Mancini of Julie Mancini Photography, who documented the start, on-course action, and finish line moments despite the challenging weather conditions.
In a dramatic turn of events, a medical emergency occurred during the race. Thanks to the swift response from fellow participants and the Ocala Police Department (OPD), a life was saved. Race organizers praised OPD as “one of the best departments in the country” for their rapid and professional response.
As runners cooled down and celebrated their achievements, many were already talking about returning next year for what has become a beloved Mother’s Day weekend tradition in Ocala.
