OCALA, FL – Law enforcement officials have arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly threatening violence at one of Ocala’s most beloved holiday traditions, just hours before the event was set to begin.
Tray Quarles was taken into custody and charged with making a written threat to conduct a mass shooting or act of terrorism after allegedly posting threatening messages on Facebook targeting the Light Up Ocala festival, according to local police. Quarles is currently being held at the Marion County Jail.
The threat was discovered thanks to vigilant community members who alerted authorities to the concerning social media post. Police acted swiftly to investigate and apprehend the suspect before the event, which is expected to draw thousands of visitors to downtown Ocala for its 40th anniversary celebration.
Law enforcement officials have increased security personnel for the festival, which runs from 3 to 8 PM today. The event features over 100 vendors, live entertainment, a children’s interactive zone, and the Junior Sunshine holiday parade with an appearance by Santa Claus. The celebration culminates in the traditional lighting ceremony of downtown Ocala.
“We take threats like this very seriously and our community’s safety is our top concern,” said a police department spokesperson. “Rest assured, we’ve increased our personnel for the Light Up Ocala event to ensure it remains safe and enjoyable for all participants.”
Despite the threat, the event is proceeding as planned, with organizers expecting a full turnout for this landmark anniversary celebration of one of Ocala’s most cherished holiday traditions.
Police encourage attendees to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity while enjoying the festivities.
