Gateway to World-Class Singletrack

The Baseline Road Trailhead is one of the primary access points for the Santos Mountain Bike Trail system, located along the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway in southern Marion County. This trailhead sits off SE Baseline Road (County Road 35A) and provides riders with a convenient entry to over 80 miles of singletrack that have earned Santos an IMBA Epic Ride designation and Bronze Ride Center status from the International Mountain Bicycling Association.

For mountain bikers visiting Ocala specifically to ride Santos, the Baseline Road Trailhead offers an alternative starting point to the main Santos trailhead on SE 80th Street. The paved parking area is free to use and provides enough space for vehicles with bike racks and trailers. A trail information kiosk at the trailhead displays maps of the trail system and current conditions, helping riders orient themselves before heading out onto the trails. Restroom facilities are available on-site.

The Santos trail network is built on former phosphate mining land and the natural limestone terrain of central Florida. What might seem like unlikely terrain for mountain biking has been transformed by decades of volunteer trail building, primarily through the efforts of the Ocala Mountain Bike Association (OMBA). The trails wind through sand pine scrub, hardwood hammock, and reclaimed quarry areas, with elevation changes that surprise many first-time riders who expect Florida to be entirely flat. The sandy soil provides excellent drainage, meaning trails recover quickly after rain and are rideable for much of the year.

From the Baseline Road Trailhead, riders can access the color-coded trail system that defines the Santos experience. Yellow-coded trails are designed for beginners and feature smooth, flowing singletrack with gentle turns and minimal technical obstacles. The Pine Tree Trail, at approximately three miles, is the most popular beginner loop and an excellent introduction to singletrack riding. Blue trails introduce moderate technical features including root sections, tighter turns, and undulating terrain suited to intermediate riders building their skills. Red trails are reserved for advanced riders and feature steep descents, technical rock gardens, and challenging features that demand confidence and bike-handling ability.

The Baseline Road Trailhead also connects to the paved Cross Florida Greenway multi-use path, which runs for miles through the Greenway corridor. This paved path is suitable for road bikes, hybrid bikes, joggers, and walkers, making the trailhead a versatile access point for different types of outdoor recreation. Equestrian trails in the Greenway system are also accessible from the broader area, though mountain bike and equestrian trails are typically separated to avoid conflicts.

For riders seeking the full Santos experience including the legendary Vortex freeride area and Santos Bike Shop with its rental fleet and repair services, the main trailhead on SE 80th Street is the better starting point. However, the Baseline Road Trailhead remains a valuable access point for riders who want to avoid weekend crowds at the main lot, or who are staying in areas south of Ocala near Belleview and prefer a shorter drive. Both trailheads provide access to the same interconnected trail network, so the full 80-plus-mile system is available regardless of which entry point you choose.
