About Sonny's BBQ Ocala
Floyd “Sonny” Tillman opened the first Sonny's BBQ on Waldo Road in Gainesville in 1968, and the chain has since grown across the Southeast. Ocala has three of its restaurants: on SW College Rd (State Road 200) in the city's main shopping corridor, on SW County Road 484 in southwest Marion County, and on E Silver Springs Blvd on the east side of town.
The menu centers on slow-smoked meats: St. Louis and baby back ribs, pulled or sliced pork, beef brisket, chicken, smoked turkey and jalapeño cheddar sausage. The Ocala Marion County visitors bureau's listing notes that Sonny's smokes its meats over oak for up to 12 hours.
Plates come with “sidekicks” such as BBQ beans, mac and cheese, coleslaw, potato salad, green beans, a baked sweet potato, fries or tater tots, with garlic bread or corn bread. Five sauces sit on the table: Sweet, Original, Sizzlin', Smokin' and Mustard.
For families and groups there is a kids' menu, family feasts and build-your-own bundles with two to four meats. All three Ocala restaurants list takeout, curbside pickup, delivery and catering.
