Muzzleloading gun season runs Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, 2026, and general gun season runs Nov. 14, 2026 to Jan. 10, 2027, in the Ocala National Forest's Ocala Wildlife Management Area. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) lists these dates for the Pipeline, Lake Delancy, Hopkins Prairie and Church Lake units. The forest stays open to hikers year round, but during general gun season camping is limited to designated campgrounds and the Juniper Prairie Wilderness. FWC's regulations brochure governs, so check it before a trip.

Most of the Ocala National Forest is also the Ocala Wildlife Management Area (WMA), which the FWC manages for hunting while the U.S. Forest Service manages the land. That means two sets of rules apply on the same ground, and hunting dates decide when hikers and campers will share the forest with hunters. FWC's regulations summary for July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027 divides the area into the Pipeline, Lake Delancy, Hopkins Prairie and Church Lake units; the brochure's map shows where each one lies. Hikers and campers can read the dates below as a calendar of busier weeks, and hunters can use them as a starting point before reading the official brochure.

Where the dates come from. This page summarizes the FWC Ocala WMA regulations brochure and the FWC Ocala hunt calendar. FWC says hunt dates may change and that the brochure is the governing document, so confirm dates there before planning a trip.

The brochure also lists a deer and bear dog training season in the Pipeline Unit from Oct. 31 through Nov. 9, 2026, and says the 2026-27 bear season dates were still to be determined.

What It Means If You're Hiking or Camping

Hiking stays open

The brochure says the area is open to public access year round and that the Florida Trail, which traverses the area, is open to hikers throughout the year. Hunting is allowed only in the open seasons above and not on any portion of the area posted closed to hunting. See the Ocala National Forest hiking guide for trails.

Camping rules change in general gun season

Under the brochure, camping is prohibited during the general gun season except in designated campgrounds and the Juniper Prairie Wilderness. Camping is otherwise allowed year round, limited to 14 days within a 30-day period. The Ocala National Forest camping guide lists the developed campgrounds. The brochure does not give separate camping dates for the Church Lake windows, so confirm with the Forest Service ranger stations (Lake George 352-625-2520, Seminole 352-669-3153).

Blaze orange

The brochure requires anyone hunting deer, or accompanying a deer hunter, to wear at least 500 square inches of daylight fluorescent-orange material as an outer garment above the waistline, except when bow hunting during archery season. It does not set a requirement for hikers; wearing bright orange during gun seasons is a precaution a visitor can choose.

Firearms near facilities

The Forest Service rules in the brochure prohibit discharging a firearm within safety zones posted around recreation areas, and, where no signs are posted, within 150 yards of a recreation facility or residence. Taking wildlife with a gun is also prohibited on the rights-of-way of all paved roads.

Current Forest Service alerts

As of Oct. 29, 2026, the Forest Service's National Forests in Florida alerts page lists stage 1 fire restrictions for the Ocala National Forest, posted March 6, 2026. Developed campsites with Forest Service fire rings and grills are exempt, dispersed campers who want a fire must use propane, and charcoal is allowed for grilling. Check the alerts page before any trip, because closures and restrictions change.

For Hunters: Licenses, Permits and Quotas

The brochure says people hunting a wildlife management area need the appropriate licenses, permits and stamps; each season lists its own set, typically a hunting license, a management area permit and, for deer, a deer permit. Some hunts also need a no-cost quota permit, applied for electronically at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com, with application periods starting April 1.

  • General gun, Pipeline Unit: 6,000 no-cost quota permits (exemptions allowed).
  • Muzzleloading gun, Church Lake Unit: 250 no-cost quota permits (exemptions allowed).
  • General gun dog hunt and general gun still hunt, Church Lake Unit: 250 no-cost quota permits each (exemptions allowed).
  • Youth turkey and spring turkey hunts: quota permits by unit, with no exemptions.
  • Fluorescent orange: required for deer hunting as described above, except with bow and arrow during archery season.

The brochure notes that regulations new or substantially different from last year appear in bold, and that WMA rules often differ from statewide rules. Read the full brochure before hunting. For other Forest Service information, see the Forest Service's hunting and shooting page; it notes that hunt camps are open only during hunting season and need a special permit, and lists the Farles Lake, Clay Lake and South Tower hunt camps as closed.

Ocala National Forest Hunting Season: Frequently Asked Questions

When is hunting season in the Ocala National Forest in 2026-27?

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) lists archery season Sept. 26 to Oct. 25, 2026; muzzleloading gun season Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, 2026 in the Hopkins Prairie, Lake Delancy and Church Lake units; and general gun season Nov. 14, 2026 to Jan. 10, 2027 in the Pipeline, Lake Delancy and Hopkins Prairie units. When does general gun season start in the Ocala National Forest?

General gun season in the Ocala Wildlife Management Area starts Nov. 14, 2026 and ends Jan. 10, 2027 in the Pipeline, Lake Delancy and Hopkins Prairie units. The Church Lake Unit has its own general gun windows: a dog hunt Nov. 14 to 22 and a still hunt Nov. 28 to Dec. 6, 2026.

Can I still hike in the Ocala National Forest during hunting season?

Yes. The FWC brochure says the Ocala Wildlife Management Area is open to public access year round and that the Florida Trail through the area is open to hikers throughout the year. Hunting is allowed only during the open seasons, so hikers share the forest with hunters on those dates.

Can I camp in the Ocala National Forest during general gun season?

Only in designated campgrounds and the Juniper Prairie Wilderness. The FWC brochure says that during the general gun season, camping is prohibited except in designated campgrounds and Juniper Prairie Wilderness. That means dispersed camping outside those places is off limits while the season is open. Camping is otherwise allowed year round, within a 14-day stay in any 30-day period.

Do hikers have to wear blaze orange in the Ocala National Forest?

The FWC brochure sets the fluorescent-orange rule for people hunting deer or accompanying someone hunting deer: at least 500 square inches of daylight fluorescent-orange material as an outer garment above the waistline, except when hunting with a bow and arrow during archery season. The brochure does not set a blaze orange requirement for hikers.

Do hunters need a permit to hunt the Ocala National Forest?

Yes, hunters need the licenses and permits listed for each season, which include a hunting license (unless exempt) and a management area permit. Some hunts also need a no-cost quota permit applied for at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com: the Pipeline Unit during general gun season (6,000 permits), the Church Lake Unit muzzleloading hunt (250), the Church Lake dog and still hunts (250 each), and the youth and spring turkey hunts.

Where do I find the official Ocala WMA hunting regulations?

FWC publishes the Ocala Wildlife Management Area regulations summary brochure and map for July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027, along with a hunt calendar for the area. FWC notes that dates may change and that the brochure governs, so check it before any trip.
