Why Does Ocala Have a Strong Rodeo Tradition?

Ocala, Florida, known worldwide as the Horse Capital of the World, has deep roots in Western riding and rodeo culture that stretch back decades. Marion County's equestrian heritage, supported by more than 1,200 horse farms and a year-round riding climate, provides the foundation for a thriving rodeo community. The Southeastern Livestock Pavilion, located at 2232 NE Jacksonville Road, serves as the home venue for Ocala's two premier rodeo events and is one of the most well-equipped livestock arenas in the state of Florida, with seating for more than 4,200 spectators.

The Southeastern Pro Rodeo has been a staple of Ocala's spring calendar for more than three decades, reaching its 33rd year in 2026. Sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), it draws top-tier cowboys and cowgirls from across the country to compete in traditional rodeo disciplines including bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, team roping, tie-down roping, and steer wrestling. The multi-day event typically features evening performances with gates opening in the late afternoon, allowing families to enjoy food vendors, Western merchandise, and pre-show entertainment before the main competition begins.

The Ocala Shrine Rodeo, held each September, carries a legacy of more than 44 years as both a competitive rodeo and a charitable community event. Organized by the local Shriners, the event raises funds for Shriners Hospitals for Children while delivering a full professional rodeo experience. The Shrine Rodeo holds a special place in the hearts of Marion County residents, many of whom have attended the event as an annual tradition spanning generations. Like its spring counterpart, the Shrine Rodeo features a complete roster of PRCA events along with specialty acts and audience participation activities.

Both rodeo events are recognized for their family-friendly atmosphere. Children can participate in mutton busting, a crowd-favorite event where young riders attempt to stay mounted on a sheep, and petting zoos and pony rides are often available in the arena grounds. The food vendor areas feature classic rodeo fare alongside local favorites, creating a festival-like atmosphere that extends well beyond the arena itself. The events draw visitors from throughout central Florida and beyond, contributing to Ocala's reputation as a destination for Western culture and equestrian entertainment.
