SunTran: Ocala's Public Bus System

SunTran is the fixed-route public bus system operated by the City of Ocala, serving Marion County residents and visitors. The system runs seven color-coded routes that connect neighborhoods, shopping centers, medical facilities, and employment hubs across the Ocala metro area. For most residents, SunTran is the primary public transit option and the most affordable way to get around without a personal vehicle.

The Downtown Transfer Station serves as the central hub where six of the seven routes converge. This intermodal station also connects to Amtrak bus collector service and shuttle service to Orlando International Airport via the Shuttleliner, making it Ocala's main transit gateway. Whether you're commuting to work, running errands, or heading to a medical appointment, most trips start or transfer through this downtown hub.

Ride-Share Services in Ocala

Both Uber and Lyft operate in Ocala and surrounding Marion County, providing on-demand rides when the bus doesn't cover your route or time. Ride-share is especially useful on Sundays when SunTran does not operate, for late-night trips, and in areas outside the bus network.

Uber

  • Service levels: UberX and UberXL
  • Minimum fare: ~$7.21
  • Availability: 24/7 (wait times vary)
  • Best for: Airport trips, late nights, groups

Lyft

  • Service levels: Standard and Plus
  • Minimum fare: ~$4.24
  • Availability: 24/7 (wait times vary)
  • Best for: Budget-friendly rides, short trips

Wait times in Ocala can be longer than in major metros. During peak hours or late at night, expect 10–20 minute waits. Surge pricing may apply during high-demand periods.

Taxi Services

Traditional taxi companies still operate in Ocala for riders who prefer to call ahead or don't use smartphone apps. Taxis can be hailed by phone and are available at the Downtown Transfer Station and some hotels. Rates are typically metered, and fares run higher than ride-share for equivalent distances. For airport transfers or prescheduled rides, calling a taxi company directly can be more reliable than waiting for a ride-share match.

Tips for Getting Around Ocala Without a Car

Live Near a Bus Route

If you plan to rely on transit, choose housing along one of the seven SunTran routes or near the Downtown Transfer Station. This significantly reduces your dependence on ride-share for daily errands.

Plan Around the Schedule

SunTran runs fixed schedules. Check route timetables in advance and allow extra time for transfers at the Downtown Transfer Station. Buses do not run on Sundays or holidays.

Combine Transit and Ride-Share

Use SunTran for regular commutes and errands during the week, then rely on Uber or Lyft for Sunday trips, late evenings, and destinations outside the bus network.

Buy a Monthly Pass

At $45 per month, the SunTran pass pays for itself after 30 rides—about two rides per day on weekdays. It's the most cost-effective option for regular riders.

Use the Transfer Station Connections

The Downtown Transfer Station connects to Amtrak bus service and airport shuttles. For trips to Orlando or Gainesville, check the intermodal connections before booking a separate ride.

Explore Biking and Walking

Downtown Ocala and several neighborhoods are walkable for short trips. Ocala also has growing trail infrastructure. Combining a bike with bus access extends your effective range considerably.
