What Is Dressage?
Dressage is a highly skilled form of riding where horse and rider perform a series of predetermined movements from memory. The word comes from the French term for “training,” and the discipline is often described as “horse ballet” for the grace and precision it demands.
In a dressage test, the rider guides the horse through a pattern of movements at walk, trot, and canter inside a standard arena. Judges score each movement on a scale of 0 to 10, evaluating the horse's rhythm, suppleness, contact, impulsion, straightness, and collection.
Levels range from Introductory (walk and trot only) through Grand Prix, which features advanced movements like piaffe (trotting in place) and passage (an elevated, slow-motion trot). Dressage has been an Olympic discipline since 1912 and is one of three phases of eventing.

For Spectators
Watching dressage live is a rewarding experience even if you've never been around horses. Here's what to know before you go.
Stay Quiet During Tests
Dressage requires intense focus. Applause is welcome between movements and after the final halt and salute, but stay quiet while the horse is performing.
Read the Test Sheet
Pick up a copy of the test being ridden so you can follow along. Each movement is scored individually, and knowing the pattern makes watching more engaging.
Watch the Horse's Frame
Look for a round, relaxed outline with the horse stepping actively underneath itself. The best rides look effortless — the rider's aids are nearly invisible.
Free Admission at WEC
Most dressage competitions at World Equestrian Center are free to attend. You can walk the grounds, watch from the grandstands, and enjoy the on-site dining.
Dress for the Weather
Dressage arenas in Ocala are often open-air or partially covered. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water — especially for spring and fall events.
Freestyle Is the Highlight
If you can only catch one class, watch the freestyle (Kür). Riders choreograph their own routine to music, making it the most dramatic and entertaining division.
