Same Time, Different Place: River Smith Wins a K-2 State Title by a Hundredth of a Second Per Mile, and Belleview Middle Takes 19th at the FLYRA Championships

River Smith of the Ocala Distance Project won the K-2 boys 1,000 meters at the FLYRA state cross country championships in Lakeland on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, in 3:50.4, the same time as the runner-up. On Saturday, Belleview Middle School finished 19th of 30 teams in the public school girls 3K, led by seventh grader Reese McGovern in 19th place.

Marion County Traffic Deaths Fell to 81 in 2025, the Lowest in Five Years, TPO Safety Report Shows

Crashes killed 81 people on Marion County public roads in 2025, down from 113 in 2024 and the lowest total in the five years covered by the Ocala Marion TPO's 2026 Commitment to Zero Safety Report. Motorcyclist deaths rose to 21, and 20 bicyclists were killed or seriously injured, the highest yearly total in the report's summary table.

MAC Cross Country Championships Preview: Lombardo, Vickerman and Brannon Are Gone, and the Field at Belleview Is Wide Open

The Marion Athletic Conference cross country championships are Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, at Belleview High School. Last year's boys champion Luke Lombardo, Zach Vickerman and Timothy Brannon have moved on to college, leaving six boys within 37 seconds of each other. On the girls' side, Lyla Hallick now runs for Vanguard.

Twenty-Eight and Twenty-Four: Vanguard Rolls On at Belleview, in a County That Builds Fast Runners Without Tracks

Vanguard won the Marion Athletic Conference boys' cross country title for the 28th straight year and the girls' title for the 24th on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, at Belleview High School. Christopher Taylor won the boys' race in 16:30.0, Lyla Hallick led a perfect 15-point girls' sweep, and South Marion scored as a team for the first time.

Hallick and Taylor Lead Marion County at New World Fall Spectacular; Inman Runs 16:00

Vanguard sophomores Lyla Hallick (7th of 398, 17:55) and Christopher Taylor (15:56) led Marion County at the New World Fall Spectacular on Oct. 17, 2026. Belleview's Asher Inman placed third in the boys' B race in 16:00, and North Marion's Brooklyn Smith ran 16:13.

'Our Hands Are Being Tied': Marion County Approves Its First Agricultural Enclave Under New State Law

In December, Marion County commissioners said no to 71 homes on a horse farm off SW 80th Street. On Oct. 6 they voted 4-0 to certify the farm as an agricultural enclave, because a new state law gave them little choice. The 71-home plan still goes through county staff review. Commissioners said the state keeps taking decisions away from the people closest to them.
