Fore Lake Campground

Fore Lake Campground is a U.S. Forest Service campground located within the Fore Lake Recreation Area on the western edge of the Ocala National Forest. Situated near the unincorporated community of Fort McCoy in Marion County, the campground provides 31 individual campsites suitable for both tents and trailers. The recreation area sits along the shores of Fore Lake, a small, quiet lake surrounded by the longleaf pine and sand pine scrub ecosystems that define much of the Ocala National Forest landscape.

The Ocala National Forest spans nearly 390,000 acres across central Florida and is the southernmost national forest in the continental United States. Fore Lake Campground occupies the forest's western fringe, making it one of the more accessible campgrounds for visitors coming from Ocala, which lies roughly 20 miles to the southwest. The campground is managed by the U.S. Forest Service under the Lake George Ranger District and can be reached via County Road 314.

Facilities at Fore Lake Campground distinguish it from more primitive Forest Service campgrounds in the area. A designated swimming area along the lakeshore offers a place to cool off during the warmer months, which in Florida extends from roughly April through October.

Birdwatching is another draw at Fore Lake. The surrounding forest habitat supports a variety of species, including ospreys, great blue herons, red-bellied woodpeckers, and seasonal warblers that migrate through central Florida. The quiet setting and limited motorized boat traffic create favorable conditions for observing wildlife both on and around the lake. The broader Ocala National Forest is also home to the endangered Florida scrub-jay, one of the state's most iconic bird species.

Nightly camping fees at Fore Lake range from $20 to $36 depending on the specific site, with a $5 fee for day-use access to the recreation area. The campground enforces a 14-day stay limit within any 30-day period, consistent with standard Forest Service policy. Reservations can be made through Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777. Holders of the America the Beautiful Interagency Pass may receive discounted rates. The cooler months from October through March are the most popular season for camping in the Ocala National Forest, though Fore Lake is open year-round.
