If your child is in kindergarten, middle school or a high school algebra class in Marion County, the math book in their backpack is likely to change. Marion County Public Schools says it is adopting new K-12 mathematics curriculum materials for next school year, and the committees choosing them can include parents and community members. The next chance for anyone else to weigh in is Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2026, at 6 p.m.

The district held an open review night on Monday, Nov. 2, from 3 to 6 p.m. in Building 20 on the Bridgeway Academy campus, 392 SE 19th Ave. in Ocala, where members of the public could look over the materials under consideration in person. According to the district, the review committees will consider that public input when they meet on Nov. 10.

Where to go on Nov. 10, by grade level

The committees meet at Bridgeway Academy, 1614 East Fort King Street in Ocala, all at 6 p.m., in separate rooms in Building 2 depending on the level of math:

  • Kindergarten through grade 5: Building 2, Room 8

  • Middle grades math: Building 2, Room 32A

  • Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry: Building 2, Room 32

  • High school mathematics: Building 2, Room 14

The district's announcement, issued Oct. 28, says the course-specific committees can include up to 15 voting members and one non-voting chair. The voting members can include up to eight teachers, two parents and five community members appointed by the Marion County School Board, and the content area program specialist serves as the non-voting chair.

From committee room to School Board

After hearing from the public, committee members vote to recommend titles to the superintendent, who then advances the recommendations to the Marion County School Board. The district's announcement does not give a date for the board's vote, and it does not name the titles or publishers being considered. Families who want to know what is on the table are directed to the district's Instructional Materials Department at 352-236-0525. The announcement does not say whether the materials can still be viewed after the Nov. 2 review night.

Why districts are choosing math materials this year

Math is one of the subjects on the state's adoption calendar this year. The Florida Department of Education lists K-12 Mathematics under its 2026-2027 adoption year, along with K-12 Computer Science. Its page reports that 198 bids were submitted for mathematics, and it posts a K-12 Mathematics Instructional Materials Adoption List, most recently updated Oct. 1, 2026, along with the specifications publishers had to meet, including a correlation to the state's B.E.S.T. Standards for Mathematics. The state department's page does not say which products Marion County is considering or will choose.

What families can do now

Parents who cannot make the Nov. 10 meeting can call the Instructional Materials Department with questions. Families whose children need extra help while the district settles on new materials can find local options in our Ocala tutoring guide, and our Marion County schools directory lists every public and private school. The school district's separate one-mill levy renewal was also on the November ballot.
