36th Young Artist Competition Finals Come to Ocala in January 2027

The Reilly Arts Center will host the finals of the Ocala Symphony Orchestra's 36th Annual Young Artist Competition on Sunday, January 10, 2027 at 3 p.m. Finalists perform in front of a live audience and a panel of judges in the Main Theater at 500 NE 9th Street in Ocala, and the winners do not simply collect a check and go home — they come back in March to play a concerto with a professional orchestra.

That is the part that sets the competition apart from most student music contests, and it is why the event has kept running for more than three decades in Marion County.

How the Competition Works

The Young Artist Competition is run by the Ocala Symphony Orchestra as part of its stated mission to motivate, encourage and enhance the musical careers of outstanding young musicians. It is open to instrumental and voice students from across the United States, not only to Florida residents.

Entrants compete in one of two divisions:

- Junior Division — ages 12 to 18 at the time of the competition, who have not completed high school
- Senior Division — ages 18 to 25 at the time of the competition, who have completed high school

In the most recent completed cycle, the 35th, each finalist received a $200 cash award, and the winner of each division received an additional $1,800 at the spring concert series. Applicants submitted an entrance video and an application fee ahead of a fall deadline, with the field narrowed to the finalists who perform live in January. The Prize Is a Performance

Winners from the Junior and Senior divisions perform their concerto with the Ocala Symphony Orchestra at a spring subscription concert. In the 35th cycle, that concert was "To Spring!", performed March 21 and 22, 2026 — covered here at the time.

For the winners of the 36th competition, the spring showcase is Fate Awakens, scheduled for March 20 and 21, 2027 at the Reilly Arts Center Main Theater. The orchestra describes the program as centering on a high-energy concerto featuring the Young Artists Competition winners as soloists.

The gap between the January finals and the March concert is short, and it is working time. In the prior cycle, winners were required to attend rehearsals with the orchestra in the days immediately before the performance.

Why It Matters Locally

Marion County students who want to pursue music seriously generally have to travel to Gainesville, Orlando or farther for high-level performance opportunities. A competition that puts a 15-year-old on stage with a professional orchestra in their own county is uncommon, and the Ocala Symphony has sustained it for 36 cycles.

The finals are also a low-cost way for local families to hear serious classical performance. Because the format is a recital rather than a full orchestral production, the January event runs as a single afternoon program.
