What to Know Before Visiting Big Lee's BBQ

A pitmaster with a Food Network trophy case, a small-batch kitchen, and barbecue that runs out when it runs out.

Master of 'Cue and the Sauce That Beat Bobby Flay

Owner and pitmaster Rashad Jones won Food Network's Guy's Big Project in 2017, hosted the Food Network series Eat, Sleep, BBQ, won BBQ Brawl in 2022 to become the Master of 'Cue, and then beat Bobby Flay on Beat Bobby Flay with his blueberry barbecue sauce. The restaurant sells that sauce as Blueberry Moonshine BBQ Sauce ($10), labeled on the menu as "the sauce that beat bobby flay!"

Named for Uncle Leon, "Big Lee"

The name honors Leon, the uncle of Jones' wife, who cooked barbecue in Greenwood in the Mississippi Delta and shared his smoker techniques with Jones before his death in October 2012. Jones writes on the restaurant's About page that Uncle Leon's generosity still shapes how the trucks and restaurant feed people today.

Once It's Gone, It's Gone

Big Lee's cooks at full capacity in small batches, and its website warns that many of its proteins need at least 24 hours to prepare and smoke, so they cannot be replaced once they sell out. The advice for out-of-town visitors is to arrive around 11:30 AM or earlier, review the menu ahead of time, and bring a cooler or insulated bag for meat by the pound headed home.

Food Trucks and Catering

The food trucks post daily locations and hours on Facebook and Instagram (@mybigleesbbq); some stops have picnic tables, and the website's food truck calendar lists upcoming events. Catering orders are placed through the catering menu on the website, which offers scheduled pickup or delivery, or by email to catering.mybigleesbbq@gmail.com. See our Ocala food trucks and catering in Ocala guides for more options.
