Is the SR 40 resurfacing project finished?
As of Sept. 30, the contractor, Anderson Columbia Co. Inc., had finished all paving on the $17.7 million SR 40 contract and was installing rumble strips and thermoplastic striping. FDOT said the project was expected to finish in mid-October, nine months ahead of schedule. Work began March 23, 2026, and the original completion estimate was summer 2027.
The contract covers three resurfacing projects along SR 40: East Silver Springs Boulevard from South Pine Avenue (US 441/301) to 25th Avenue, 25th Avenue to NE 64th Avenue, and NE 64th Avenue to SE 196th Terrace Road. The work also updates pedestrian curb ramps as needed to current ADA standards. The project lengthens the two left-turn lanes from northbound South Pine Avenue onto westbound SR 40 and the right-turn lane from northbound South Pine onto eastbound SR 40. FDOT's October agency report separately lists the downtown segment, which includes stamped crosswalks, as one year ahead of schedule.
When will the I-75 northbound rest area in Marion County reopen?
FDOT expects the $31 million reconstruction of the northbound I-75 rest area between CR 484 and SR 200 to be finished in late 2026, and the rest area is closed to the public until then, according to the status report and the FDOT project page. As of Sept. 30, crews had demolished the six pavilion structures and filled in their foundations, and FDOT said additional improvements are needed before the facility can reopen.
The contractor, Commercial Industrial Corp., started in August 2023. The project rebuilds the facilities, updates amenities and adds parking for cars, RVs and trucks. The old truck lot is being resurfaced as the car lot, and a new truck lot and ramps are being built. What is happening with I-75 widening and the SW 66th Street bridge?
FDOT is adding auxiliary lanes in both directions on I-75 through Ocala under two Moving Florida Forward contracts, each with an estimated completion of early 2029.
- South of SR 44 to SR 200 ($230 million, Anderson Columbia): most of the SW 66th Street bridge over I-75 had been demolished as of Sept. 30, and the contractor expected to take down the center pier in the median in mid-October. FDOT's October agency report lists the center pier as demolished and gives a tentative completion of May 2027 for the bridge, while FDOT's Marion County lane closure list, checked Oct. 22, still shows the bridge closed until mid-June 2027. Construction of the replacement bridge has begun, and auxiliary lanes are being built between CR 484 and SR 200. Detours are in our SW 66th Street bridge report.
- SR 200 to SR 326 ($242 million, Lane Construction): crews are building embankments and retention ponds for the new NW 49th Street interchange, which will be a diverging diamond, and began driving piles for its bridges in mid-September. Replacement of the NW 63rd Street bridge began in July. The project also adds a displaced left turn at the SR 326 interchange and a jughandle intersection at NW 44th Avenue. The interchange's "OCALA" gateway feature is covered in our NW 49th Street gateway report.
Farther south, the $40 million CR 484 and I-75 interchange project, which also resurfaced I-75 from the Sumter County line to SR 200, had major construction complete as of Sept. 30. The contractor was working on punch-list items, and final acceptance was expected in early to mid-October.
What road work is coming on US 27/441 and SR 200?
US 27/441 resurfacing: CW Roberts is milling and resurfacing nearly 8.7 miles of US 27/441 from the Sumter County line to south of US 301 (Abshier Boulevard). As of Sept. 30, crews were grading shoulders and rebuilding driveways, and paving was projected to begin in October. The $8.9 million project started in June 2026 and is expected to finish in summer 2027. It also refreshes pavement markings and replaces signs where needed.
SR 200 at SW 60th Avenue: Chinchor Electric Inc. began a $1.01 million safety upgrade at this SW College Road intersection on Sept. 9. The work adds a second span wire so each SR 200 travel lane has its own signal head, adds reflective backplates that make signals easier to see, improves intersection lighting and refreshes pavement markings. Completion is estimated for winter 2026. SR 200 is one of the corridors with the most deaths and serious injuries in the TPO's 2026 safety report. More on the corridor is in our Highway 200 guide.
What else is on the Oct. 27 TPO agenda?
At the same 3 p.m. meeting in the Marion County Commission Auditorium, 601 SE 25th Ave., FDOT will ask the TPO Board for feedback on a revised design for the Pine Avenue and SR 464/SW 17th Street intersection. For weekly closures, see Ocala road work for Oct. 25-31 and Oct. 18-23.
