SW 66th Street Bridge Over I-75 Being Replaced: Detours and Lane Closures in Ocala

The Southwest 66th Street overpass above Interstate 75 in southwest Ocala is being torn down and rebuilt. Crews from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) began demolition on the night of Monday, September 21, 2026, according to WCJB TV20. The bridge stays closed to cross traffic while the replacement is built.

Detour: Use SW 43rd Street Road

Drivers who normally cross I-75 on SW 66th Street must use the SW 43rd Street Road bridge instead, which can add time to commutes in the area. Southwest Ocala residents heading to the shopping and dining corridors along SW College Road and SR 200 should plan a few extra minutes.

Overnight Lane Closures on Northbound I-75

During demolition, northbound I-75 lanes are closed overnight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Traffic merges from three lanes down to one, and the speed limit is reduced to 60 mph approaching the work zone. The original schedule called for closures through Thursday, Sept. 24, resuming the following Sunday night if the work was not finished. Crews told WCJB they could not give a completion estimate for the demolition phase.

Why the Bridge Is Being Replaced

The overpass has been struck repeatedly by tall vehicles. FDOT District 5 spokesperson Cindi Lane said the bridge "has experienced some bridge hits over the years," including semi-trucks carrying oversized loads and dump trucks with raised beds. The new bridge will be about five feet taller and wider than the old one.

Part of the Larger I-75 Widening

The bridge work belongs to a broader FDOT project that is widening I-75 lanes from Wildwood to State Road 326 in northern Marion County. Expect more lane shifts and overnight closures along the corridor as the project advances.
