West Port Senior Luke Lombardo Wins Mother's Day 5K in 15:46 as Christopher Taylor Tightens His Grip on Run Ocala Series
This is a sports news article published on 2026-05-12 covering local Marion County, Florida news. Luke Lombardo — the West Port senior heading to Furman University in the fall on an academic scholarship — crossed the Mother's Day 5K finish line first in 15:46. Christopher Taylor took second in 17:11 to extend his lead in the Run Ocala Race Series, and Gosia Hightower of Belleview was top female overall in 21:47.
Luke Lombardo Closes Out a Senior Year in Front
Luke Lombardo, 18, of Ocala won the race outright in 15:46, more than a minute clear of second place. Lombardo is a senior at West Port High School, and this fall he's heading to Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, on an academic scholarship — the kind of exit that says as much about the classroom as it does about the cross country course.
Last fall on the cross country course, Lombardo ran 16:06 at the New World Invitational and, one week later, won the individual Marion Athletic Conference (MAC) cross country championship in 16:32. The MAC team title went to Vanguard — which, in a small-town-running coincidence, is the program Christopher Taylor runs for.
His 15:46 on Saturday morning was a reminder that the spring road-race circuit, for Lombardo, is just track-season cross-training with medals on the table.
Christopher Taylor: Two Wins, One Runner-Up, and a Series Lead
If Lombardo's day was about closing out a senior year, Christopher Taylor's day was about the long game. The 14-year-old from Morriston crossed second in 17:11, claiming the runner-up spot at the Mother's Day 5K and — just as importantly — collecting another stack of Run Ocala Race Series points that keeps him on top of the season standings.
Here's what Taylor has done across the last three Run Ocala races:
| Race | Age Group | Gender | Overall | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Valentine's Day 5K | 1st (5) | 1st (10) | 1st (110) | 125 |
| Luck of the Leprechaun 5K | 1st (5) | 1st (10) | 1st (110) | 125 |
| Mother's Day 5K | 1st (5) | 2nd (9) | 2nd (108) | 122 |
Three races, three age-group titles, two overall wins, and a second-place finish that came on a day when one of the fastest 18-year-olds in the state happened to show up. Taylor is on pace to take the Run Ocala Race Series outright if he keeps stacking points like this through the back half of the calendar — and at 14, he's doing it against a field that's almost entirely older than he is.
Top Female Overall: Gosia Hightower of Belleview
The women's race went to Gosia Hightower, 40, of Belleview, who crossed in 21:47 — ninth overall in a field of more than 50 finishers. Hightower has become a fixture at the front of the local women's masters scene; she finished second female overall and top female masters at the Cogent Bank Ocala Cup 5K two weeks earlier in 22:28, and she dropped 41 seconds off that time on Saturday morning.
Behind her, Alyssa Jensen, 32, of Ocala took second female in 22:57, and Madison Gleason, 29, of Anthony rounded out the women's podium in 23:05.
"Flatline to Finishline" — Darryl's Comeback
The hardest finish to earn on Saturday morning didn't belong to anyone at the front of the pack. It belonged to Darryl McGinnes, who suffered a heart attack at last year's Mother's Day 5K and came back this year to cross the finish line in a custom shirt that read "Flatline to Finishline."
It was Darryl's first 5K in a year — a year that started in the back of an ambulance at the same race he just finished. His family and friends were waiting at the finish with a hand-painted sign — hearts, an EKG line, and the words "Flatline to Finishline — Go Darryl!" — and the cheer he got walking through that finish chute was, by any reasonable measure, the loudest of the morning.

A race calendar can fill up with PRs and series points and engraved trophies, but the reason most small-city 5Ks exist at all is moments like this one. Welcome back, Darryl.
A Word From the Race Director
Darrin DeTorres, race director for the Mother's Day 5K, said the 2026 edition was the largest in the race's history.
"This was a great event — our biggest one yet," DeTorres said. "I want to thank the community for showing up the way they did, and a special thanks to our local police, who I genuinely believe are the best in the country. They make every one of these races possible."
The Community Around the Finish Line
A Mother's Day 5K only works if the people who don't run show up too — and on Saturday morning, two local businesses turned out to make sure the runners got taken care of.
Calles De Oro was on-site pouring hot coffee, a small but unmistakably welcome detail at an 8 AM start in early May. The Mexican spot has built a steady local following for its food, and the team's willingness to roll out before sunrise on a Sunday-eve weekend morning is the kind of community presence that doesn't show up in any standings sheet.
Orangetheory Fitness brought a contingent out to cheer, hand out support, and represent the city's fitness community at the start and finish lines — exactly the kind of cross-promotion that keeps Ocala's race calendar feeling like one connected community rather than a series of one-off events.
And the photos that will live on social media for the next week? Those are courtesy of Julie Mancini Photography, who was out on the course capturing finishers from the front of the pack through the back. If you ran on Saturday and you're looking for your race photo, that's where to look.
Next Up: Surface the Future 5K — Building a Rubber Track in Marion County
The next stop on the local racing calendar is one with stakes that go beyond the finish line. The Surface the Future 5K is set for Memorial Day weekend, and the entire purpose of the race is to raise money and awareness for building a rubber track in Marion County.
That's a bigger deal than it might sound. Marion County's high school track athletes — including the Lombardos and Taylors of the future — currently train and compete almost exclusively on asphalt or aging hard surfaces, while their counterparts in neighboring counties run on the kind of synthetic rubber surfaces that are standard at every level of competitive track and field. A new community rubber track would give local runners a place to train safely, host meets, and develop talent without driving out of the county to find a proper surface.
If you run one more 5K this spring, this is the one to put on the calendar:
