Ocala Area Runners Shine at 12th Annual Florida Horse Park Invitational

The 12th Annual Florida Horse Park Invitational, hosted by Vanguard High School, brought together some of the state's top cross country talent this past weekend, with local Ocala area runners holding their own against elite competition from across Florida.

Belen Jesuit Dominates Boys Competition



Miami's Belen Jesuit Prep lived up to their reputation as one of the nation's top cross country programs, sweeping the boys team title with an impressive 39 points. Marcelo Mantecon led the way with a blazing 15:10.8, followed by teammate Armando Cruz at 15:24.2. The Wolverines placed an astounding eight runners in the top 50, showcasing the depth that has made them a national powerhouse.

Local Boys Show Strong Individual Efforts



Despite facing elite competition, several Ocala area runners posted solid performances in the boys 5K. Jaylen Blackburn of Vanguard High School led local finishers with a 16:30.4, placing 37th overall. Jacob Rogers followed for the Knights at 16:43.2 (52nd place), while Timothy Brannon contributed a 16:58.0 (73rd place). Trevor Berquist (17:21.0, 100th), Alex Lammens (17:48.8, 143rd), and Christopher Taylor (17:57.6, 156th) provided additional depth for Vanguard.

Belleview showed competitive depth with Lachlan Bryniarski running 16:47.5 for 59th place, Lucas Morrow at 17:17.2 (94th), Asher Inman clocking 17:38.1 (123rd), Chapman Stewart finishing at 17:53.6 (148th place), and Jacob McGovern contributing a 19:06.4 (267th place).

West Port was represented by Luke Lombardo with a solid 16:42.6 for 51st place, Adrian Lozano at 19:32.0 (288th), and Kenneth Price finishing at 19:39.6 (307th).

Forest's Zach Vickerman posted a strong 17:12.4 for 91st place, with teammates Dennis Rotella (19:03.8, 263rd) and Carter Morrissey (19:49.2, 311th) also contributing.

Trinity Catholic showed solid representation with Eddie Zinnie at 18:40.1 (224th) and Christopher Hughes at 18:45.1 (228th), running within seconds of each other, plus James Dingle contributing a 20:05.7 (335th).

St. John Lutheran's Aiden Mann (19:12.0, 270th) and Nolan Farris (19:15.0, 274th) represented their school well, with Behr Ehler (20:56.8, 367th) and Teddy Scott (21:20.9, 374th) also competing.

North Marion was led by Darryl Johnson at 18:00.8 (165th), Brooklyn Smith at 18:01.4 (168th), and Fernando Fabian-Mata at 21:37.6 (383rd).

In team standings, Vanguard finished 11th overall, Belleview placed 14th, West Port 26th, Forest 43rd, Trinity Catholic 47th, St. John Lutheran 48th, and North Marion 46th among the 51 scoring teams - respectable showings against such elite competition.

Episcopal Powers Girls Race



Jacksonville's Episcopal School dominated the girls 5K, capturing the team title with 132 points. As mentioned, Episcopal represents one of three powerhouse programs within a six-mile radius in Jacksonville's competitive 2A landscape, with cross-town rivals Bolles and Bishop Kenny competing elsewhere this weekend.

Curtis Sisters Lead Vanguard Girls



The Vanguard girls were paced by the Curtis sisters, with Ava Curtis placing 12th overall in 19:18.2 and Emma Curtis following in 19th at 19:36.4. Savannah Risner (21:15.4, 89th) and Natalie Lammens (21:38.2, 105th) provided solid depth for the Knights, who finished 9th in team standings.

Forest's Lyla Hallick turned in an impressive 20:07.0 for 36th place, with teammate Ellie Page finishing at 25:39.5 (264th).

St. John Lutheran showed good depth with Sydney Farris (20:28.3, 57th) and Annalise Hallick (20:58.2, 78th) both running well, while Kathryn Schatt (24:26.6, 220th) and Emma Jenkins (23:37.7, 194th) also represented the Eagles.

Trinity Catholic was led by Lauren Murphy with an impressive 21:21.0 for 94th place, while Mya Vail finished at 23:15.9 (178th).

Belleview was represented by Maggie Lorick at 22:10.9 (129th place), Tatiana Dobkowski at 25:36.7 (262nd), and Hadlea Sams at 26:00.7 (280th place).

West Port's girls were led by Ximena Diaz at 21:36.4 (104th), Rylee Vilela at 24:49.0 (239th), Brianna Espinoza at 24:52.9 (242nd), and Isabella Denton at 25:22.5 (257th).

Rising Middle School Stars



The future of Ocala area distance running looks bright based on middle school performances. In the girls 3K, Rylee McGovern and Reese McGovern of Belleview Middle School finished in a thrilling 1-2 battle, with Rylee edging her teammate 12:34.7 to 12:35.3 for 12th and 14th places overall respectively.

Lila Williams of Osceola MS posted a solid 14:29.9 for 58th place, while The Cornerstone School's Lacey Mosley finished at 15:07.8.

Elite Competition Raises Bar



The meet drew top-tier competition from across the state. In addition to Belen Jesuit's boys dominance, other powerhouse programs like Buchholz, Columbus, and Creekside provided fierce competition. The girls race featured similar depth with Episcopal, Creekside, and Lourdes leading strong fields.

Many of the top local performers got their competitive start with the Ocala Distance Project, coached by Darrin DeTorres. The grassroots program has been instrumental in developing the area's running talent, creating a pipeline of athletes who continue to excel at the high school level.
